Memoirs of a Stay…..In today’s (predictable) world of hospitality, this 1,200-square-foot Portland loft is an urban escape that truly stops you in your tracks. Unexpected, impressive, spacious, and yet perfectly cozy, the loft has the ability to transport and transform you - if only for a few moments, hours, or days. My first visit to the loft in Portland’s buzzing Alberta Arts district, did just that, transporting me and ushering in an experience to remember After opening the door, the walk up the red-clad stairwell seemed to create a bridge between my past and the soon-to-be present. At the top of the stairs, having left my previous reality and stresses behind, the loft space opened up into a great room that beckoned me to drop my bags and explore.
So that’s what I do. The first thing I notice is the one-of-a-kind wooden paneled flooring throughout. Then I notice the kitchen -- fully equipped with a Wolf gas range and oven, kitchen island, ample counter space, and kitchen amenities to sustain even those with the most advanced culinary skills. With New Seasons being just two blocks away, I decide that this kitchen will not go unused.
I turn and look to the common living space, again wonderfully elevated from any of my previous lodging experiences. Vaulted ceilings, endless windows and an eccentric array of design and decor that reads almost like an Epistolary novel. Each piece of art, each photograph sparks my curiosity -- I want to know who these people are, where each piece came from and the stories behind them. I begin to make things up; a creativity that’s been quiet for so long is unexpectedly ignited. I pull the floor-to-ceiling curtains back to an astonishing balcony, that during summer months could almost serve as an entire living space of its own. There are boxes of toys, and for a minute I even consider pulling them out. But, alas, more curiosities draw me to them.
I go outside, and the surroundings stir a playfulness -- something geisha comes to mind...and I decide to prepare myself accordingly, to dine at the incredibly classy, yet edgy Yakuza Izakaya downstairs. The idea of a stroll down some predictably cool street quickly grows stale. This place stirs every aspect of a formerly vibrant me. I take a little more time to get ready than usual, taking advantage of every aspect of this space and imagination inspiration.
I pull back the industrial shoji screens to a bathroom that I guarantee is the only of its kind. A clawfoot tub sits in the center of the room, with wooden stairs to climb for easy getting-in and a sleek system of faucets for a no-hassle fill.
Bathrooms are too often just plopped into a living space, with no consideration of how much time is actually spent there. Not here -- it’s given every bit as much significance as any other room. From the bathtub, I look outside over yet another large patio space. Metal shelves, wooden beams and natural light fills the room. Doors open to both bedrooms, for an entirely new, expansive bath-taking experience.
The lush Japanese Garden landscape leads me to a steaming, Onsen-inspired, stone-built soaking tub, outdoor showers and a cold plunge, stone bath. The hum of happy eaters and drinkers from Yakuza draws me back through the lush garden and inside.
It’s truly hard to believe that this restaurant/bar is just downstairs. Yakuza is utterly complementary to the Loft space.
I sit at the bar and order a delicious Super Spicy -- notice a rather distinguished gentleman sitting next to me, a physicist. We catch each other’s gaze; he offers to buy me a drink; and, as it turns out, we share chemistr(URL HIDDEN)After a few drinks and some sushi, we go back upstairs to admire the loft space. We kiss a little and frolic from room-to-room. Each of the two bedrooms is as unique and as enchanting as the next. One room sleeps the inner child; the other sleeps the whimsical adult. And even those are interchangeable.
But even our inner children need coffee, so we follow our noses to Extracto just across the street. Best creamy cappuccino one could ask for. Creative energy fills the room. And any kind of workout imaginable, any restaurant, unique shopping -- all within walking distance.
I have stayed in hotels, Airbnb’s, and inns all over the world, but this place is unrivaled in every way.
