Come enjoy our new location! Green Roof Culture House celebrates diversity, sustainability and creativity. Built in 1884, this lovely Foursquare house was purchased in August 2019 next to Paducah's downtown, just one block from City Hall and walking distance to restaurants and entertainment.

Three themed rooms on the second floor make up our Airbnb: each with a new Serta Queen Mattress and new TV with cable access and wifi. "The Americas" is ready for guests! Continental breakfast.

Die Unterkunft
The Green Roof Culture House was purchased as a partnership between two world travelers, Diane who lives in Wisconsin, and myself (who lives in the back of the first floor). The house was built as a duplex and later converted into a single family home. It was last owned by Inland Marine which gives it a nice connection to the river history of Paducah. We purchased it with the intention of running the Airbnb on the second floor and to develop programming around our core themes for our local community.

There are four bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs. One bedroom has been converted into a laundry room and the other three have international themes: The Americas, Asia and Africa. The Americas is ready for use. The foyer at the top of the stairs will be Europa. All rooms are decorated with vintage finds from those areas.

The flooring is old linoleum which is covering beautiful maple wood. We plan on redoing the floors in the future. Meanwhile, we are using new carpet remnants and tribal rugs to make the rooms more comfortable.

The rooms share two bathrooms. They have big claw foot tubs that were tiled over in the 1950's. The green bathroom is functional, but slow to drain. We are working on it. The pink bathroom needs new pipes, but toilet and sink work. We love the authentic elements still true to the house, but like any old house have had to do quite a bit of updating to the infrastructure.

The downstairs has a large living room, dining area and front porch. Guests are welcome to use these spaces and enjoy the eclectic feel that is emerging as we settle in. Plates, glasses and cups are available for guest use, along with a microwave and toaster oven. Guests do not have access to the kitchen. There is a communal fridge downstairs and a small fridge upstairs for longer stays.

A simple continental breakfast is provided with fruit, coffee, tea, hot cocoa, cereals and whatever bakery goods we pick up.

Security:
There are cameras on the front and back of the house. A City street light lights up the back yard which makes coming in or out at night easy. Park toward the right of the sheds so that your car is in the camera view.

Pets: I have four cats and a chihuahua in the back area where I live. They are not allowed in the public areas, but be aware that they do live here. We cannot accept other pets at this time as we are not set up for it, but eventually we hope to build another space which will be pet friendly and have wheel chair access.

Children: The house is not suitable for small children at this point.

Perfumes: We avoid scented products for laundry and cleaning.

Recycling: We recycle paper, cardboard, metals, and #1 and #2 plastics. Please put yours in the blue bins outside or give to Rachel. We also compost anything that is biodegradable. Ask Rachel what to do.

Smoking: No smoking of any kind is allowed in the house. Smokers may use the front porch or the yard. Please keep butts in ash trays provided. Marijuana is not legal in Kentucky and prohibited on the premises.

Guns: No guns allowed in the house.

Zugang für Gäste
Guests have access to their bedrooms, the living room, dining room, front porch and yard.

Parking: Guests park in the back and enter through the front. Dolly available, if needed. No elevator up to the second floor, where the rooms are located.

Weitere wichtige Hinweise
This is a brand new project and there are many things that we will be working on over the next months: installing ceiling fans, changing the electrical outlets, redoing the floors, painting the walls, tweaking the decor and so on. We may also have programs happening in the downstairs area, classes or gatherings. I will update the listing as we move forward, but flexible, easy going and adventurous people will be happiest here.

Special Price: Enjoy a deal as we work to get things set up! Your feedback will help us make this a great landing space for future travelers.

Checking in:
I will be unavailable to check people in early from Thursday-Saturday, so on those days, check-in will be from 6:30-9PM. On the other days, check-in will be from 3-9PM. Check-out is at noon.

Shop:
If you need to see me when I am at the shop, you can come visit! It's just a couple of miles away: Artizan Made, 1700 Kentucky Ave. The shop is a collective of international artists. Our focus is on eco-fashion and home decor.

We could not have asked for a better location! We are just one block from City Hall, our wonderful Library, and the Post Office and just a couple of blocks from the Riverwalk, the Wall to Wall Murals and the downtown area. A couple more blocks gets you to The National Quilt Museum and several tourist destinations. The downside is that our street is a busy thoroughfare which makes sitting on the porch noisy, but it's very nice when the traffic dies down in the evening.

The house is surrounded by other businesses as immediate neighbors and on the edge of a mixed neighborhood, Black and White. There are many historical houses which have been restored including the Hotel Metropolitan, just a few blocks away, where BB King, Louis Armstrong and other famous Black entertainers stayed. Another house was used in the Underground Railroad and has escape tunnels under it. I am a member of Race Unity Group of Paducah, which seeks to promote friendships between people of different races.

Green Roof hopes to offer a gift to Paducah, bringing a joyful approach to what we see as critical needs in our current social and political mix. We realized that we have many people here who have come from other countries with very little being offered to celebrate those roots of cultural heritage. Climate change also looms large in our minds and we hope to encourage others in creative ways on how we can live in harmony with birds, bees, butterflies and other beings.

Both Diane and I have traveled widely and have lived abroad. I grew up in Brazil, as a missionary kid (1962-1980), and later traveled around Central and South America and Europe. Diane served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Micronesia (1966-68), adopted a daughter there, and has traveled all over the world. I lived in Chicago for 20 years and moved to Paducah in 2005. I've worked with artists and fair traders for all of that time and have a large online international community. Diane is an avid knitter and attends knitting workshops regularly and teaches at her local Wisconsin knit shop.

Our Airbnb will help support our Green Roof programs and we are excited about the new connections we will develop through our guests. We offer discounts for longer stays, so do consider us as an option if our philosophy fits in with your plans.

18 years in Brazil, St. Olaf College in Minnesota, then 20 years in Chicago and landed in Paducah, Kentucky in 2005. It's been a wonderful ride, driven by a life of handmade and a commitment to simple living. The Green Roof International House is a partnership with my dear friend, Diane. We started the project in August of 2019 and hope that it will be a wonderful space for travelers and locals. I traveled a great deal when I was younger. My parents were missionaries in Brazil where I grew up and I maintain many friendships from that time through social media. I've been to Mexico, Jamaica, Colombia, Peru, Paraguay, Panama, Venezuela, Uruguay, Equador, a quick landing in Iceland, then Germany, Sweden, Portugal, Spain and France. Our city in Brazil (Maringa, Parana) was built by recent immigrants and ethnically diverse. After college, I spent 20 years in Chicago and had friends from all over the world. My online businesses continue to expand those connections which I enjoy a great deal. My lifestyle is simple and suits me. I like food, but am not a great cook and tend to eat salads and stews. I try to buy organic, recycle and do my best to keep a green house, although I am neither a purist nor perfect. My chihuahua and four cats keep me company, along with parakeets and finches who were born in captivity. All of my animals are rescues. They are not allowed in the guest areas. I love nature and try to get out in it as much as I can, although I am pretty tied to the computer as it is how I make my living. I've enjoyed living in Paducah and hope to offer a good memory to my guests through airbnb. I'm a casual host, available as needed. I can visit or give privacy, whatever is preferred. I empty garbage cans daily, vacuum every couple of days, provide as many clean towels as needed but do not make beds nor straighten rooms once guests are in. Their room is their space except for the garbage and vacuum. Each room has a small fridge and there is a dining room downstairs with dinnerware, microwave and toaster oven. I've enjoyed every guest so far and look forward to meeting new people as they come through.

Während deines Aufenthaltes
I run an online business which has a shop two miles away. I will be there on Thursdays-Saturdays from 12-6PM. The rest of the time I should be at the house. Paducah is a small city, so if I am out, I can usually get back within 15 minutes.
