la Barraca d'Aigües Vives, Comunitat Valenciana, Spanien

This region is covered in orange groves. We are located in a valley between mountains, which provide for beautiful hikes (if not too hot!) & mountain biking. The beach town of Tavernes is sleepy and only frequented by locals and Spaniards, so no English, German and Dutch to spoil your trip ;)

Valencia is nearby and one of the most popular cities in Spain at the moment. Between us and Valencia are lots of rice fields and nature park Parc Natural de l'Albufera.


La Caseta is very quietly located about 2 km from the center of La Barraca d'Aigües Vives, at the end of a fertile valley with orange groves. The valley ends in the Mediterranean, with several beautiful sandy beaches in the immediate vicinity.

Directly next to the house there is a footpath that winds through the forests and mountains in the area (to get on the footpath go left when you exit the gate and climb through the forest against the hill for about 25 meters). Several GR routes run through the village (indicated in red / white). The Muela de Cortes nature protection area is some 20 km away.

There is not much to do in the village of La Barraca. You will find a bakery and two restaurants. In El Hostal you can taste the atmosphere of the region for very little money (daily menu 8 euros, incl. wine and coffee). It is especially pleasant during the 'almuerzo' (from 9.30 -11 am) when the workmen from the neighborhood have breakfast there.
Between 5 and 10 km away are Tavernes, Carcaixent and Alzira, local centers where you can find all your groceries. Especially in Alzira and Carcaixent are several good restaurants. Gandía is 20 km away on the coast, with an extensive shopping center and numerous restaurants in the historic city center.

Valencia, the third city of Spain, is some 40 km away. It has a beautiful old town with numerous monuments and museums, and among many other highlights the beautiful Turia Park with the spectacular Ciudad de las Artes y Ciencias. For more sophisticated shopping you can go to the El Eixample district, where all the big couturiers have a store. If you worry about the busy traffic in Valencia, you can take the train in both Tavernes and Alzira (2 x per hour), which takes you right into the middle of the city.

Xátiva is also a nice place with a beautiful old castle, surrounded by the old city center. At the foot of the castle lies Montsant, a delicious restaurant (rather expensive for Spanish terms, but very affordable for us) with a beautiful view over the city (in the town follow the signs El Castell / castle).

The closest beach is that of Tavernes (follow signs 'Platja'). It is a huge sandy beach, very quiet, with hardly any restaurants, etc. That beach runs all the way to Gandía. There is more entertainment in Gandía, with its nice boulevard along the beach with restaurants and terraces. On the beach you will find showers and toilets and beds and umbrellas available for rent. The beach life is also animated in Cullera, 5 km to the north, where you will find Aquapolis, a large water theme park.

Tavernes and Alzira are regional centers with quite a few shops. Alzira is the largest, there is, among other things, a huge Carrefour with a big fish department. In the shopping mall in Carcaixent you will find, a.o. a cinema, a supermarket (Eroski, cheaper than Carrefour but less luxurious) and a large Zara.

In Tavernes there is a market on Thursday and in Alzira on Wednesday.

In many restaurants they serve a 'menú del día' around noon (from 1.30 pm) for a price of 7 to 10 euros incl. a glass of wine or beer and coffee.

In La Barraca there are two restaurants, but unfortunately not so great. El Hostal, in the middle of the village on the road along the main road, has a daily menu for € 8.00 in the afternoon. It is a typical Spanish workers' restaurant, also very animated at breakfast and between 10 and 11 in the morning, when everyone pauses with a sandwich (tasty sandwiches with ham, sausages or omelet). You can also order a paella and take it home (against payment of € 5.00 deposit for the pan).

In Tavernes you can eat well at lunchtime in La Cepa Andaluza, Carrer Sant Josep 124 (menu del día for € 8.00). It does not look very fancy, but Mari can cook a delicious meal: take the CV50 towards Tavernes. As soon as you reach the village (so before the petrol station) take the 1st road on the left (carrer del Portalet) and then the second to the right (carrer Sant Josep). They are in the second block on the left. There is a surprisingly good vegetarian restaurant (La Casa Viva). Aires del sur is also recommendable.
A fine traditional Spanish restaurant is Casa Victor, at the beginning of the village. Always very busy, but that's a good sign.

In Carcaixent
A must is El Llorer, great daily menu for 10 euros.
On the Paseo (the small boulevard in the center) are several restaurants with a daily menu and fine terraces.
Bar Musical, Calle Julián Ribera 26, Tel. 96 243 03 11, is beautiful old Spanish cafe.
Masía de la Calzada, Partida de la Marjal 259, between Carcaixent and Pobla Llarga (tel 96 243 04 33). Classic Spanish and French cuisine. A bit more expensive, but very tasty.
Bar Aném (contrary to what the name suggests a real restaurant), Calle Carlos Gomis, 7, Tel. 962 434 577/962 431 730.

In Alzira
El Camí Vell, Calle Colón 51, refined modern Spanish cuisine.

In Xátiva
On the way to the castle, which lies on the top of a mountain, Montsant is a beautiful hotel / restaurant with a great menu and beautiful terraces. Really something for a night out or a long Sunday afternoon lunch. Also very good: La Picaeta de Carmeta, and Canela y Clavo.

In Cullera
One of our favorite restaurants: Casa Salvador in Cullera, Avenida de l'Estany, a very old Spanish family restaurant at the border of a lake (El Estany de Cullera) between Tavernes Playa and Cullera. Reservations are recommended, and then ask for a table on the terrace at the water: tel 0034 96 172 01 36. The most delicious paellas (with small eels and artichokes, for example) and other rice dishes, and all kinds of tasty appetizers to share. Take the road to the beach of Tavernes. At the first roundabout after crossing the railway line turn left, so parallel to the sea, direction Cullera. When yoyu’ve almost reached Cullera keep a close eye on the signs on your right hand, until you see the sign 'Restaurante Casa Salvador'. There you turn right into a small road, and follow the signs. From home it is a half hour drive. It does not look very spectacular when you arrive, but the terrace at the back of the inland sea is very nice and the food is delicious.
