HOTEL 1887, THE NEW OPERA HOUSE
The famed opera house “Lai Chun Yuen” of the 1910s and 1920s was built in 1887, underwent many transformations over the years. During its heyday, it welcomed famous opera stars of China and Hong Kong.
Patrons sat around small tables watching performances and very often indulged in vices as well.
The Japanese occupation in Singapore left the building in a dilapidated state and had to be restored to accepted standards.
