Lage

San Juan Capistrano, Kalifornien, Vereinigte Staaten

I’m using this space to recommend sightseeing and restaurants. I will describe in San Juan Capistrano, which are all walking distance, and then talk about nearby towns.

Walking out the front door to the right, or West, you will come to the library on the corner, designed by Michael Graves, the most famous architect in the world when it was built in 1983. Take a look at the courtyard inside. There is a trolley stop on this corner, which connects with trolleys in nearby towns in the summer. Next to the library are a couple of nice public tennis courts.

Across the street is the large Mission church. The long block that it is on contains the 1776 Mission, whose entrance is on the opposite side. Don’t miss the beautiful 1786 Serra Chapel once you are in.

Walking South from the Mission entrance down Camino Capistrano is the Antique Barn on the left side, and a block later is Ellie’s Table, a casual restaurant in a historic house. Across the street is the El Adobe restaurant made famous by President Nixon. Go to the happy hour on Taco Tuesdays and get a carnitas taco on the patio.

Head West on Verdugo St. toward the train station. You will pass the movie theater. Walk through the lobby to Rick’s Cafe upstairs and sit on the balcony for a nice view. Be sure to cross the railroad track to stroll down Los Rios St., the oldest street in California. Check out the petting zoo, McNeil Museum, and Hidden House Coffee. Since people live in the same properties as the businesses, they are not allowed to open for dinner, so visit during the day. I recommend Hummingbird House Cafe for good food and prices.

Drive North on scenic Pacific Coast Highway to Laguna Beach, about 20 min. away. Walk the downtown, and be sure to visit Heisler Park, that stretches along a spectacular clifftop overlooking the beach and tide pools.

Also nearby is Dana Point Harbor. Jon’s Fish Market is known for fish and chips, and will grill seafood to order. The Harbor Grill is a sit-down restaurant with excellent hardwood grilled fish and fresh oyster specials on Thursdays, but no view. On a cliff overlooking the harbor is the Chart House, designed by famed modern architect John Lautner out of glass and concrete with a beautiful curved wood interior. The view is fantastic both night and day, stop in for a drink to enjoy it.

San Clemente to the South has nice beaches and a pier with the excellent Fisherman’s restaurant. It also features grilled fish, which a great view. The main shopping street is Del Mar, which is very walkable.
