Whilst on holiday in St Mawes, Cornwall having lunch at The Pandora Inn at Mylor with my sister and brother in law back in September '14, my husband Tim and I decided it was time to make some changes in our lives and we planned a new life for ourselves in Cornwall. We both gave up our long term careers; I worked in foreign exchange and had been based at Gatwick Airport for 23 years and my husband in the motor trade in Beckenham, Kent for over 30 years. We sold our home in Surrey and made the move to Cornwall in August '17 - two years ahead of our planned target! We both love everything about our lives in Cornwall we feel blessed and very lucky and enjoy the added benefit of living just under 2 miles from the border between Cornwall and Devon which has made a big difference for us in as much as we are more easily connected with friends and family from different parts of the UK whilst living in this amazing county.
During our working lives, we both especially enjoyed the customer service side of our roles so it was a natural transition of career for us to join forces and combine our shared passion and skill sets running our two holiday homes together - The Signal Box from 2018 and The Sidings followed on later in 2020. We believe we've achieved the perfect balance with both holiday properties located in totally different, unique and private areas of our former railway station home with both set well away from the main station house and so that visiting guests and we can all enjoy a privacy, seclusion, relaxation and peace.
Since moving to Cornwall, we have spent our time renovating our home and garden and continue improving our holiday homes and the grounds of the station creating, what for us, is a unique and special place to live and for people to visit.
Since we opened The Signal Box and The Sidings we have welcomed and listened to feedback from guests as well as ideas and advice from friends and family and using this valuable information we continually strive to keep improving and refreshing our homes. Whilst we were closed for business during the pandemic we were grateful that we were given the opportunity and downtime to make changes and improvements to both The Sidings and The Signal Box that we believe have added to the overall experience.
Enjoying 'that view' has been the number one positive comment shared by our visitors (we've welcomed in excess of 1200 guests so far!) and we feel that the addition of hot tubs set in outdoor undercover areas facing 'that view' added to the experience and also provided additional covered outdoor space for when the weather and seasons dictate.
We are really looking forward to the seasons ahead and will continue striving together to provide guests with totally unique and memorable experiences at The Signal Box and The Sidings. Constructive feedback is always welcomed so that we may continue to improve.
Our very much loved pets share out lives too
Rico, is our 7.5 year old big grey soppy rescued Italian mastiff (cane corso) and Nero our more recent addition, our black cane corso puppy born in December 21 - Many guests bring their own dogs to the old station so we tend to keep our dogs out of the way in our part of the property so that all dogs have their own space.
Our cats Florence (fluffy black) and Dougal (fluffy ginger) are nearly 4 years old now, and brother and sister - born in the RSPCA in Cornwall and both wonderful personalities but tend to stay out of the way.
The four sheep living in the paddock surrounding The Signal Box (all tame and all dog friendly/savy) are:
Francis (the big boy) he's the oldest at 4 years old and we brought him down from Surrey to live with us in Cornwall, he was a tame bottle fed lamb in a farmers field and I fell in love with him and wanted to save him from his fate...
The two other smaller white sheep are Boris and Donald - they are rare breed white faced Dartmoor sheep that we bought from a farm in Devon. The breed originates from the Dartmoor area so they were ideal to join the Luckett Station flock and Thomas the little black sheep who is almost a year old now, he joined in July '21 he was rescued when found trapped between rocks on Bodmin Moor and abandoned by his mum. He's a lovely natured boy.
We also keep 10 beautiful pet chickens in a large enclosure close to the main house, (and regularly let them roam in the station grounds) 4 stunning grey, white and black copper marans amongst them. If they are available, guests are offered eggs too - they're delicious! £1.50 for 6 or £1 for 4, please just ask if you'd like some.
