No elevator buttons or public entrances. More isolated than a condo/hotel, but near everything. Professionally cleaned & sealed 3 days prior. Waterfront, hot tub, stunning views, private deck, your very own fenced garden, kitchen and laundry (how romantic!), shared dock. Soaker bathtub with a view of to inlet (now THAT’S romantic!). Like a cottage in the city: a stay-cation paradise! Very dog friendly! VOTED VICTORIA’S BEST Airbnb in 2019 by our moms (plus they say we are charming and handsome!)

Die Unterkunft
BUT WAIT! We don’t want to over-sell the place! “That Place on Portage” is NOT for everyone, and we believe in being honest about some key defects:

Impeded View:
The serene water view can be disrupted by traffic such as kayaks, canoes, and other paddling vessels. Herons, geese, swans, ducks, otters, and seals frequently disturb the otherwise calm waters. Some mornings the glass railings get dewy, usually when wisps of fog float across the water. We are terribly prone to rainbows. Sorry.

Dangerous Wild Animals:
When you open the gate from your private fenced garden to the shared yard, we cannot guarantee safe passage to the goldfish pond, to the water-side dining table, to the cobblestone patio-for-two, or to the dock. This is where our cocker spaniel, Daisy (the self-proclaimed Princess of Portage) reigns supreme. (This is also where we entertain friends and family. Beware the inlaws. Do not feed them wine. Do NOT tell them we said this!)

Rough Terrain :
Unfortunately, in order to access your private entrance, you must traverse a path down your west-coast side garden. This means moss, ferns, hostas, old twisty grape vines and climbing ivy. It also means bark mulch and paving stones, old brick stairs, and uneven footing. Not healthy for rolling suitcases. If you value your your wheels, consider carrying your suitcase down the garden path. Watch your step.

Earthquake Simulations:
Your laundry used to be a “designated shared space.” But we would rather provide you with additional privacy and use another laundry upstairs. The upstairs laundry has a spin-cycle like a 4-minute rocket. Don’t worry. You probably won’t hear it: we try to use it while you are out. But if you do feel the rumbling sensation of an earthquake, it’s probably just a load of whites.

Undue Physical Exertion Required:
Yes, the bathtub has a window. As you lay in the soaker tub, looking out to your west-coast garden and Portage Inlet, you may feel a tad vulnerable. If so, you will need to set down your glass of wine, stand up out of your warm bath, reach up, and bring down the blind. We sincerely apologize for making you work so hard. It can be a tough life, here.

Wrinkley Sheets:
Unfortunately, your sheets do not contain polyester. They are pure cotton. As a result, they may not be as smooth-looking as a polyester blends. If sheet-wrinkles are an issue, don’t be sad. You do have an iron and ironing board in your suite. Enjoy!

Really Old Furniture
It’s true. We admit it. You have a new leather couch and a hotel-quality 2018 Sertapedic mattress, but many of the pieces in your suite are antiques from the iconic Empress Hotel. All entities have been removed from the old hotel’s furnishings by a spirit-releaser who has smudged your suite and has certified that the furnishings are no longer possessed. Kidding. We don’t actually know any spirit-releasers. Well, unless you count our friend, Pat, who opens many bottles of spirits on a regular basis.

In all seriousness, here’s the deal:

It’s rustic. Yes, there are neighbours and traffic and lawnmowers and house noises. Sometimes you can hear the neighbour kid practicing the tuba from across the bay. On rare occasions, someone plays bagpipes. Seriously. But there are also gorgeous views, the sound of water cascading in the pond, spring bulbs, butterflies, blueberries, summer-scented lilies and apples from the tree in the fall. There are otters and hummingbirds and bald eagles. We love this place and want to share it with you. Once you pull in from the busy city road and walk down the garden path, it’s like you have arrived at your family’s cottage on the lake. Except without the family drama.

Let That Place on Portage be your romantic hideaway. Spend some time together in a beautiful setting where we care about your privacy and comfort. We’ve had babymoons, honeymoons, and even several weddings, here. One guest even said she was going to name her baby, “Portage.” (Even we think that’s a horrible name for a boy. Really, we don’t make this stuff up.)

Let That Place on Portage be your secret retreat after an intense day of meetings or classes. Or better yet, don’t even go in: take advantage of our fast wifi and work from your laptop at your kitchen bar with a water view. Just don’t tell them you’re enjoying it!

Let That Place on Portage be your springboard to exploring the island or a well-earned rest after conquering the West Coast Trail. Or the Vancouver Island Ale Trail. But, really, this place is a west coast experience in itself. Bring your binocs. Bring your camera. Bring your well-behaved furry friend. Definitely bring your paddle board, your kayak, or your canoe. Parking at our dock is always included.

We promise you won’t forget That Place on Portage. And in the end, we hope to make it YOUR place on portage, your home while staying in Victoria. Ta da.

Zugang für Gäste
Self check-in is super easy, but we still send detailed instructions. The path down the side of house is rustic with uneven footing and 5 stairs up to the entrance level of your suite. You have your own parking space, a separate entrance, your own gated garden, and a deck of your own. We also want you to enjoy the rest of the property. Use our hot tub. Pick some apples or blackberries, sunbath on the lawn, read in the hammock, have dinner by the water, go for a swim in the inlet... And as a special benefit, guests are permitted to pull weeds anytime they like!

Weitere wichtige Hinweise
-Get your kayak into the water minutes after you leave work/school. Use That Place on Portage as your home base as you discover southern Vancouver Island.

-You will be smack dab in the middle of three key locations: downtown Victoria, UVIC, and Royal Roads University, all 8 km away in different directions.

-There are great places to walk your dog (or your husband) nearby.

-The suite is really made for two, but if a third guest wants to crash on the sofa, then that could work. (Better for a guest shorter in stature: the leather couch is a only 4’9”).

- We make every effort to make sure the shared hot tub is available for you. But we can not ABSOLUTELY guarantee it. Sometimes, tubs are unavailable while undergoing maintenance, cleaning, or refilling. Please think about that if a hot tub is super important to your plans.

-There is lots of space on your private deck to store and lock your bikes.

-Unfortunately, we can no longer greet you at the gate with a lei, a kiss on the cheek, and say “Welcome to the island.” Hawaii got mad and threw a conniption. Lousy, jealous Hawaii...

Lage

Victoria, British Columbia, Kanada

Close to everything in Victoria! You will be staying in an urban area of Victoria called The Gorge-Tillicum neighbourhood, which features the Gorge and Portage Inlet as its most unique natural feature. WTF? What are these bodies of water? Essentially, the water from Victoria’s inner harbour pours in and out of a long narrow channel called the Gorge. About 8km away, this narrow channel opens up into Portage Inlet, a much wider, lake-like body of water, somewhat hidden from public view and with limited public access. That Place on Portage sits on a little bay in Portage Inlet and really feels like a cottage in the city. In fact, the focus of the home is towards the backyard and to the water, rather than to the street and surrounding neighbourhood.

You will be a block and a half away from the Gorge Waterway Park, a narrow, long park that follows (you guessed it) the Gorge and is planted with interesting gardens containing unique specimens of both native and exotic trees and flowers.

You will be close to Admirals Walk, which has a Thrifty’s grocery store, a liquor store, drug store, and other shops. Traffic can be busy on Admirals road at rush hour, so sometimes it’s more relaxing to bike it or walk (about 20 minutes) to the store.

Tillicum Mall and the SilverCity Cinemas are a 4 minute drive away. The enormous Uptown Shopping Centre (Walmart, Best Buy and numerous other shops and services) is about an 8 minute drive.

The neighbourhood is walkable, bike-able, buss-able and canoe-able.

We are Mike and Geoff. We love sharing a drink and conversation with new friends. We are happily married and have been together for almost 30 years. (Shit! That’s a long time!) We love to travel, especially where the water is warm (hola!). But even more than travel, we are discovering how fun it is to host. We are having so much fun meeting people from all over the world. We have been lucky enough to live on Portage Inlet for over 14 years and look forward to sharing it with you. Mike works for a non-profit, supporting people with intellectual disabilities. Geoff is retired, a volunteer at the BC Cancer Agency and an aspiring amateur photographer. What else? We don’t know... You’ll just have to meet us.

Während deines Aufenthaltes
Having your own garden, private deck, and private entrance makes for a greater sense of separation from us and the rest of the world. Sometimes, we don’t even see our guests during their entire stay! Sometimes, we share an evening at the water’s edge. In the end, the amount of interaction is really dependant on you. We’d love to bump into you at the dock, but we also respect your privacy. The Princess of Portage does bark at new people and dogs. But give her a treat, and she’ll love you forever. (Give Geoff a beer, and he’ll love you for ever.)
