Die Unterkunft
Situated less than a mile directly up from Kailua Bay, our home is close to everything in Kona, yet removed in a quiet neighborhood. Our new (2017) private heated pool was created for relaxation. Enjoy swimming year-round; lounge on the beautiful pool deck that features several furnished sitting and lounging areas with umbrellas. Our home is ideal for both young families and couples seeking privacy yet convenience. Enjoy your next special time together – a honeymoon, anniversary or just getting away from it all!!

Kini Kini Pua (meaning 40,000 flowers in native Hawaiian) is a three bedroom, two bath house. The master suite, with king bed, has an on-suite bath with twin sinks, tub and separate tile shower. The home has separate living, family and dining areas in an open floor plan. There is a second full bath. The kitchen is equipped with all the essentials. The house is decorated with island themes in mind. The indoor living area is approximately 1400 square feet. Washer, dryer and laundry sink are located in the garage.

The property is surrounded by lava rock walls that provide privacy and extend the outdoor living area. Native Ohia wood fencing, tropical landscaping and accents create a "real" Hawaiian feel that will stay with you long after you leave the Island.
Our home is best described by Our Guests that have made Kini Kini Pua their vacation retreat over the past year –

… The outdoor area pool/garden was beautiful and very relaxing, just being there put us at peace. This was our honeymoon and we had a wonderful time on the island. We would definitely stay here again, it was perfect! Thanks again Richard your place made our trip better than we could have imagined!

…One word: Paradise. Kini Kini Pua is a perfect home base for your Hawaiian adventures. The house had everything we needed, and the outdoor spaces were truly amazing. We spent most of our time out on the lanai or by the pool, enjoying the views of the ocean during the day and the stars at night. The house is in a quiet neighborhood up the mountain but is also a quick (5 min) drive to downtown Kona. Richard was the perfect host and had fast responses to any questions that we had. I can't recommend Kini Kini Pua enough.

…Kini-Pua is home in paradise, an oasis within an oasis. The layout is conducive to easy gathering and to privacy. Kitchen is well-appointed and augmented by the essential gas grill on the lanai. The pool is a luxury-become-necessity, extending the day's water and social activities, or a place of serene contemplation. Location is near Kailua-Kona town and beaches, a retreat overlooking all from the lanai and pool area. Nearby pastoral hills produce distant sound of a stray steer/horse/donkey in the evening and the trill of birdsong morning and evening.

…This is a top-notch Airbnb. From the initial communication, I knew this would be a great Airbnb experience. However, this was the best Airbnb we have stayed at. I highly recommend if this place is available, book it, you will be thankful you did. So many extras provided, and it is greatly appreciated.

…Wish I knew more Hawaiian words so I could rave about Kini Kini Pua in two languages!! From the sparkling pool, to the beautiful decor and the perfect location, we could not have had a better time in Kona. One of the nicest airbnb homes we have used, and Richard was a charming and communicative host.

…What a lovely house! Has everything you need for a comfortable Hawaii stay. Really feels like vacation being there. Back patio eating area and pool area are very thoughtfully done. Pool is properly heated too which is not always the case at rental homes. Beds were very comfortable. House layout is well thought out. There is even an outdoor shower near the pool. Everything is immaculate and tasteful. Richard is extremely responsive. The kitchen is perfectly well equipped when you are tired of eating out. When you do want a dinner out, you are very close to lots of spots in town. Good grocery, butcher, coffee shop and wine shop nearby. The previous reviews written set a high expectation and also hit the mark.

…Kini Kini Pua was a fabulous home with great amenities and close to area attractions. The gardens and pool were gorgeous, and we took full advantage of them during our stay … It was like staying in a botanic garden! The outdoor lava rock shower was awesome and got used more than the inside shower. It was like showering in a jungle hideaway. The home was neat and welcoming, and Richard was on top of communications. His travel tips were super thorough and gave us plenty of suggestions to go try out. All spot on. We have stayed in a few airbnb homes and this was the best we have stayed in so far.

…By far the best Airbnb we’ve stayed at. The ceiling fans and natural breezes are wonderful. No A/C was no problem. We were extremely comfortable. The beds are amazing and clean. The bathrooms are just as amazing and clean. The pool was beautiful and wonderful. Very close to shopping and restaurants. Kitchen was great and well stocked with everything you need to enjoy at home meals. We will most definitely be back.

My wife and I have been enjoying the Hawaiian Islands for 40 years now. It has always been a dream to have our own special place there. We have had the Pua for about 6 years now and could not be happier. With the addition of the pool and other upgrades to the property we are now offering our home to guests. As we can attest first hand, it is a perfect home for couples and families. We hope that your stay in Kailua-Kona at Kini Kini Pua is special to you as well.

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Vereinigte Staaten

Our home is in a quiet residential neighborhood one mile directly up slope from Kailua Bay. We ask our guests to observe quiet time between 9pm and 8am, and refrain from creating resort type noise at any time in accordance with the new Hawaiian law. The property has views of the ocean from the pool area and yard. Shopping and services are less than a half mile away including Safeway, Walmart, Lowes and many other shops and restaurants. Regarding restaurants, I offer the following recommendations regarding food:

If you plan to shop for your food, Safeway is nearby and the local farmers markets are good for all fruit and veggies. There is a large permanent “farmers market” that has fruit, vegetables, flowers, clothes and souvenirs that is very convenient right downtown next to the Catholic Church. Parking is free. Cash is usually necessary. Hours 7AM to 4PM, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. We usually get avocados, papayas, mangos, bananas, limes and other terrific tropical fruits – they taste so much better over here than the ones you get imported. Note that mangos will be imported to the island if out of season here – mango season here is in the summer.
Special Note – there’s a great blender in the cupboard so be creative - exotic smoothies and tropical drinks are there for the making!!!)

There are lots of places to eat – these are a few of my favorites -

Jackie Rays – Great bar. Great food. More local. Not on the water but chef and bartenders are first rate and have been cooking there for a while. Place to go if you want great fresh catch fish, steak, pork – yum!! Never disappointed with a meal from Jackie Rays.

Mi’s – Great location upstairs on the water above Daylight Mind. Great food. Italian. Indoor and outdoor dining. Even though they have many great dishes on the menu my wife always orders the Rigatoni with sausage – she says why bother with anything else when this is perfect!

Hugo's - love the location - good for sunset dining – Great happy hour! In fact, this place has my favorite happy hour on the island. Food is great and half off on some really good items and drinks – and the view is spectacular. Their sister restaurant next store is a beach bar (On the Rocks) The Rocks can have some good music at times – walk by and take a listen from the street – you may want to spend some time there if you like what you hear. May need reservations at Hugo’s. Great bartender at Hugo’s – super good at fine tuning the most complicated concoctions!!

Sushi – Lots of Sushi places but only one that I can say for sure is great – Seiji’s Sushi. Hole in the wall place but owner/chef is world class, worked in New York, SF and overseas. Can make anything you want. The place is hard to find but keep trying if you like Sushi.

Gertrude’s – Great place – really different for Kailua – it is a jazz bar Kona style. They have music every night – closed on Mondays. Jazz, Salsa (with some hot dancing), some blues mixed in, and my favorite is the guest night (Wednesdays) where they have local and non-local talent jam. At times it has been dynamite on guest night surpassing a usually great lineup the other nights of the week!! Gertrude’s (named after Gertrude Stein) has tapas that are always very good and some terrific signature cocktails. The place is upstairs and all open like a giant lanai and the views and breezes are easy, add a cocktail and some bacon wrapped dates and you are off to heaven!!

Foster’s Kitchen – Newer spot with great views, good fresh food, nice large bar, attentive wait staff. Specials are always good – never had a bad meal or poor dining experience here.

Lefty's - on Alii Drive, Mexican, sit up at the bar with a table overlooking the street. (The place is on the second floor). Great Margaritas and good food - do not over order - you might want to share nachos. Cowboy nachos are killer!! Casual vibe.

Thai Food – Bangkok House. Great food -low key atmosphere. Bangkok House has great people owning and running it and their tapioca pudding is bomb! My wife will go there just for that. Take out available. Not on the water but worth it if you want fresh Thai cuisine.

Health Food Store. - Island Natural Food Store and Deli. Funky location but great store. High prices for most items but reasonable for prepared food in their deli. Great used book store located at the end of the parking area in back of the health food store - it has a massive selection and is very organized – you can also trade in your old books!! Fun.

Huluakoa Cafe and Gardens - The food here is top notch - great lunch spot outdoors, great dinners as well. Wait staff more in tune with the diner than most places in Kailua. Combine your dining with seeing this funky town of Hulualoa with lots of art galleries in Kona’s coffee country. A 15 minute drive but you will get a feel for the coffee growing area when you go to this town above Kailua-Kona. Always cooler temperatures than Kailua. This is our favorite place to have a meal even though it is not on the ocean.

North of Kona

Browns at Fairmont Hotel - Fine dining on the beach - special meal, great service, pricey. Great to walk the grounds of the hotel – stunning gardens and rocky beach with turtles - we usually hang out and walk around before and after dinner. Need reservations, fairly expensive but for the most part you get what you pay for. Also, the beach bar next to the restaurant is cheaper, the food is good and it is closer to the ocean - we enjoy both. There is also a bar up in the hotel that is spectacular – especially when at dusk the native torch lighter is running from tiki to tiki with a flaming club and blowing into his conch shell!! Quite entertaining.

Mauna Kea Resort - The bar and restaurant on the beach are terrific and the restaurant and bar in the hotel (may need reservations) are also super great - pricey but not outrageous. Great to explore grounds and at night you may see a manta ray in the hotel's special light that shines offshore. This is one of my favorite places to be on the island – it has it all – great beach and swimming, beautiful landscaping and views of the ocean – great spot to view whales in the winter – great food and drink – classic architecture of a luxury tropical hotel.

Lava Lava at Waikoloa. It is behind (past) the Marriot hotel. Turn left off the main highway on to Waikoloa Beach Drive then left on Ku'uali'i Place and go to the end of the road. It is a great place for a late afternoon cocktail that leads to a dinner on the beach then stay to listen to the music and watch the sunset - cannot be beat - show up around 4-5 to get a nice table down by the water, put your bare feet in the sand and know that you are on vacation. This place has gotten very popular and can be crowded.
