Die Unterkunft
Olive Mill Suite
The Olive Suite can be rented with the Olive Room with its share twin beds ... ideal for a family. The main Olive Mill room does not have windows and natural light, but is well lit with about 30 downlights! Or use subtle lamp and secondary lighting. I have added a small shower room and toilet.
The adjoining Olive Room, which provides your private entrance to the Mill area from the garden, does have a French Door and a window in the ensuite.
There are two single beds in the Olive Room (it has a larger ensuite) and the main Olive Mill area has a King size bed 190cm wide, a sofa and a long bench seat which can become a single bed. It has a table for four ... or more if you need it. It features a simple kitchen area - a self catering space with simple amenities of an induction hot plate and a microwave and bar fridge. A small ensuite with shower has been added ... great for friends travelling together or a family needing more space.
The room is large enough for a family or friends to share by adding a second double bed or single bed instead of the sofa or table if you want your own space with dormitory sleeping arrangements.
The huge 190cm wide bed is great for taller people like me, who have enjoyed this space in the past.
It is the area where olive oil was processed and features the large olive grindstone (with seating around it) and the olive presses. They're like huge objet d'art.

Here are all the rooms to look at. Most can be booked instantly.

We have several rooms so ask about booking others for more space. English-speaking host Geoff Milner (but help him practice his French a little!) will guide you on how to get the most out of your visit to the area. We are renovating the Croix du Pape, which is no longer open as a restaurant upstairs.

Here's all the rooms listed so you can compare. The Olive room is a share twin with single beds. The others are doubles.

You can enjoy the spectacular views from the large paved terrace and shaded garden with the view of Eze Village and the Mediterranean. We have a barbecue on the terrace you are welcome to use and if you want to make a salad or do some jacket potatoes to go with it I can supply you with what you need.

Auberge de la Croix du Pape on the great driving road Route de la Grande Corniche between Nice and Monaco has stunning views of the mediaeval village of Eze and The Med. It takes its name from a cross outside commemorating Pope Pius VII staying at the auberge 200 years ago. The Pope came this route to crown Napoleon Bonaparte the Emperor of France and to marry him to his Austrian bride ( no, not Josephine).

Auberge de la Croix du Pape is a former olive mill named after a cross here to mark a Pope Pius VII's visit in 1814. The original Olive Mill Grindstone and presses date back to well beyond his visit. The Olive Mill was an important local building with olive growers bringing their produce to be processed.

Some areas are being renovated so please understand that its a work in progress and you get to see that evolution. I don't want to restrict guests from the business end of the work where we have storage and equipment to do our work next to a parking area you can use. Under our terrace there is a casual lounge opening on to the terrace to relax out of the sun or inclement weather. It's not all finished but 99% of guests enjoy our place.

We can arrange to show you around the area and give you tips on our favourite special places you might otherwise not have heard of.

You're so close to enjoying so many great places, starting with the spectacular scenery everywhere as you go along the Three Corniches that run from Nice towards Italy. If you're travelling by car I'd say drive down to Monaco, Beaullieu, Villefranche sur Mer ( by the sea), Nice Port Quarter and Old Town (Vieux Ville and drive along the Promenade des Anglais that runs from the airport to the Castle Hill just before the port). You can also head via the A8 Motorway entrance near La Turbie to the town of art galleries St Paul de Vence, then Grasse, Antibes and Cannes. Cagnes sur Mer just over the Var river at the airport even has a quaint Old Town on the hill as well as a long beach. In winter we like to drive up to the three ski resorts in just 90 minutes for the day or just an afternoon. Hire some skis and a half day pass. Because it's so close, if you're not a hardened skier, it's a fun thing to do. But then you can return to a bigger centre like Nice instead of a chalet ski holiday. I always think that getting away to Nice from much colder and dull grey winters in Northern Europe is a terrific idea. It's quieter of course in town but that time of year may suit people. Perhaps not to use up valuable holiday weeks ... but certainly for a weekend break in Spring and Autumn when our weather beats the rest of the country. The sun seems to come out once you reach south of Lyon!

I was a journalist, sub-editor and designer in newspapers for 32 years... so obviously I love to meet new people. We opened Auberge de a Croix du Pape in 2009 and I thoroughly enjoyed welcoming the people from all over the world travelling to Eze with tour groups from various companies. I speak English and will do my best to speak in French. I love to meet new people and chat. Strangers are just friends you haven't made yet! We closed Croix du Pape restaurant in 2015 to take a break and renovate rooms downstairs. We would like to bring CDP alive again with people... it's never happier than when it has company. And it's the same with me. I like to dabble in things artistique... I can make you a stained glass window like the sign at the front of the auberge. We look forward to welcoming you at Auberge de la Croix du Pape, which takes its name from the cross at the front of the auberge which commemorates the visit of Pope Pius VII in 1814.

I'm very excited to share with guests any tips on places to see and tips on hidden gems you get from local knowledge. The Auberge was a working olive oil mill at the time of Pope Pius VII's visit. Our cool Olive Room still houses the huge grindstone in a pit to mash the olives and huge wooden corkscrew presses to squeeze the last oil from the fruit. We are at a loss to explain how the grindstone was driven but we believe two "tank rooms" of water were used to pump water up the hill to drive a water wheel when the topography of the land was quite different. We have photographs from former owners of the Auberge in the early 1900s showing their family and construction of the upper building on the ruins of the olive mill. The temperature at the Auberge.., 500 metres above the sea is a few degrees cooler than Nice, especially in the afternoon and early evening when the sun goes rounds the corner of our hill and gives you some relief from a hot day perhaps at the beach ... or just enjoying our sunny terrace or shaded garden to read and sunbake.
