Lage

Westport, County Mayo, Irland

The Quay area of Westport is about 20 mins walk from Westport’s town center ( ~ 7 mins drive) and possesses a unique character of its own with pubs, restaurants, hotels, shops and galleries now occupying the old coastguard station and warehouse. Walk down to the harbour and take a cruise on Clew Bay. Cruises run daily from May - October.

You can’t miss Westport House only a few minutes walk away. Enjoy a walk through the picturesque grounds and exit at the town gates. Walk back to the house via the “Greenway”. Croagh Patrick towers over Westport (on a clear day). Climbing it is a rite of passage (takes around 3.5 hours). Pack your rain gear, mobile phone, water & snacks , put on your hiking boots and drive along the coast to the starting point in the village of Murrisk.

If cycling or running is your thing, or you just feel like taking a leisurely walk or ride, head for the Great Western Greenway accessible a few steps away from the house. The Greenway is also a very pleasant way to walk into town. Bikes can be rented nearby. It’s a 42km cycling trail linking Westport and Achill Island along the route of an old disused railway line (gentle gradients). There's no shortage of spots to refuel your energy along the bike trail with villages, cafes & pubs on route. This trail is a recommended 'must-do' on your activity list.

You can go swimming at “The Point” at high tide - this is walking distance from our home. Just walk down the road alongside the Towers pub to the end past the Heritage center - there is a small car park at the end and you’ll see steps into the water.

Pier-jumping at Lecanvey pier near Croagh Patrick is always fun for the family.

If you like to go off-grid , take a day trip to Ballycroy National Park and walk the Bothy Loop.

In your mind’s eye, Conjure an image of a vast, tranquil green expanse that can be found in Ireland’s unspoiled wilderness.
In the area surrounding County Mayo’s majestic Nephin Beg Mountain range lies the Wild Nephin Ballycroy National Park, a place once referred to as “the very loneliest place in this country” by naturalist Robert Praeger.
The third largest of Ireland’s six National Parks, this is the place to escape to when it’s time to get back to nature.
Wild Nephin Ballycroy National Park comprises 15,000 hectares of Atlantic blanket bog and mountainous terrain, covering a vast uninhabited and unspoilt wilderness. Nestled within the park you’ll find Letterkeen Woods, which contains three looped trails, varying in length and difficulty. The Bothy Loop – a six-kilometre trail which only takes about 90 minutes to complete, during which time you’ll pass over boggy ground, across stony streams, and along forested roads.
Getting there?
The Bothy Loop is most easily reached from Newport. When leaving the town, take the N49 towards Achill but turn right after 1km when you see the sign for Letterkeen Loops. After a 12km journey, you’ll find the trailhead at Robert Lloyd Praegar (which is a basic shelter for walkers) in Letterkeen Woods, where you can park. The car journey from Westport should only take about 40 minutes so it’s an ideal day out. Pack a lunch or grab something at Kelly’s kitchen cafe in Newport on the way and head out!

Interesting Fact: The Wild Nephin Ballycroy National Park is also home to the Mayo Dark Sky Park, Ireland’s first gold -tiered International Dark Sky Park, showcasing some of the darkest, most pristine skies in the world. Who can say they’ve visited a Dark Sky Park? The Gold Tier award is the highest possible accolade, meaning that Mayo is now internationally recognised as one of the best places in the world to view the wonders of the night. As a beginner to stargazing, choose a clear night around the new moon to see over 4,500 stars, planets, the Milky Way and if you are lucky even meteor showers.
