Wake in comfort to the sound of the sea, explore the misty brooding Romney Marsh, then warm up in the many atmospheric pubs with intriguing histories, resident ghouls, roaring fireplaces, cracking ales and tasty pub grub, walk along our pebbled beach, look out across the shimmering blue sea and you’ll feel like you’ve discovered another world.

Stay at Coastguards Lantern and discover a landscape full of myth’s and legends, surrounded by the haunting loneliness of Romney Mash. A flat, open landscape of wide skies and fields criss-crossed by a lattice of drainage ditches, where yellow waterlilies float in early summer, it offers the opportunity to wander quiet lanes and paths and to visit some of its famous medieval churches and the vast stretch of historic invasion coast.

Built in this secluded spot, to help guard against smuggling and invasion, this beautiful renovated coastguard cottage is the perfect location for a holiday away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Right beside the sea, near the village of Camber, and with views in every direction, Coastguards Lantern is a special, recently renovated holiday cottage surrounded by wild beauty. To one side is SSSI-designated marshland (Site of Special Scientific Interest). To the other, the sea, so seclusion is a given. Yet you are only a few minutes’ drive to the medieval Cinque Port town of Rye for shops, pubs and restaurants.

Coastguards Lantern is a modified traditional coastguards cottage with modern updates layered over its 143-year-old bones. As soon as you step inside, you will note the careful attention paid to this home’s renovation.

Dining & Lounging

The newly equipped open plan kitchen/dining room has everything you’ll need to prepare lovely meals, including a beautiful Range cooker, Nespresso Coffee Machine, breakfast bar and farmhouse dining table. Why not visit Rye and buy locally caught seafood fresh from the boat? Or some Romney Marsh lamb from the local butchers? Beside The Sea Holidays will be more than happy to recommend our favourites!

After dinner, cosy down on the comfy sofas in the lounge and watch the flames dance in the log burning stove—the centrepiece of this lovely space.

Bed & Bath

Upstairs you’ll find a stunning and modern bathroom with a secret: a customised bath set high enough for sea views to accompany your soothing soak. Dare we say with a glass of wine as an accompaniment? How perfect is that?

The large, comfortable master bedroom has a super king-size bed and unspoilt views over the sheep-studded marsh where the local smugglers plied their trade.

The second bedroom has two 3ft beds and a stunning view of the sea, plus a small flat screen TV with DVD, just in case you ever tire of watching the waves and sunset!

Outdoors

The cottage has a decked south-facing and quiet garden, the perfect place to relax after a day of coastal hikes and historical sites. The pebble beach is mere steps away, with a paved boardwalk spanning its length for sand-and-stone-free jogs. Do as much or as little as you like here, with only the crackle of the fire and the crash of the waves to interrupt the quiet.

Other things to note
Coastguards are old properties in a very exposed location and in the winter months the wind can really howl off the sea - some guests love watching the weather go wild or the sea mist rolling creating an eerie atmosphere, while some have found it a little unsettling.

So if you are not a fan of older houses that have history and character then this would not be for you - we do have modern properties down the road that are in a more sheltered environment.

The cottages are next to the Lydd Ranges, a military firing range (its also a nature reserve).

It has been used for military training for over 150 years and is part of the Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay Site of Special Scientific Interest (it is home to incredibly rare plants and animals)

Because the range is used for live firing access is sometimes restricted - red flags are flown during these times, access is prohibited along the foreshore.

When firing is not carried out, it may be possible to walk along a designated path along the shore.

Feb & Mar 2020
During Feb and March the Environment agency are carrying out essential emergency sea defence works to extend the range of the sea wall to the rear of the coastguards. The compound to the right of the cottages will be where they will be housing their machinery.

Throughout 2021 the Environment Agency (EA) will be working on improving the existing coastal defences between Jury's Gap and Dungeness and so will be utilising the compound to the right of the cottages (the area with the green containers on the photo) this will mean that the construction vehicles will be using the promenade to access the ranges on the MOD land.

We’re happy to discuss your expectations and match you with the home that will suit you best, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Our Story Beside The Sea was set up in 2009 by us, Richard and Sophie. Originally from Essex, we fell in love with Camber, Rye and the beautiful unspoilt sandy beach over 10 years ago and bought a holiday cottage. It didn’t take us long to realise that we wanted to offer a much more personal service to holiday cottage owners and their guests than we had experienced from other agencies. We started small but Beside The Sea soon grew from a part-time job into a proper family business. While Sophie looks after the accounts side of things and Richard handles the web/techie stuff, we work together on all aspects of the business. This also includes Arthur (our 2 year old) and Oscar (our dog) – as a family, we love meeting guests who come and stay from all over the world. Our mission is to offer a truly personal service to make your stay at one of our Camber Sands holiday cottages as relaxing as we possibly can. Any queries, any issues, we’re here for you and just around the corner. We look forward to welcoming you soon!
