Lage

Zarakes, Thessalien und Mittelgriechenland, Griechenland

‘Zarka’, the local name for Zarakes, is a traditional Greek farming village where elderly ladies dressed in black and old men on donkeys, are a regular sight. It is a lively, friendly village situated in the narrowest part of Southern Evia and has glorious views over the Aegean Sea to the East and the Gulf of Evia to the West. It is a working village and is set in unspoilt, hilly countryside. Olive groves cover the slopes and the jingle jangle of sheep’s bells is never far away.

Zarka has two butchers, two tavernas, a well-stocked mini market and general store, a baker, a pharmacy, a post office and a builders’ merchant. Many vans visit the village every day selling fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, live chickens, suckling pigs, household goods and clothing.

The village has a large church, a small primary school and a free Doctor’s clinic twice a week.

The old community of Mahala, which means market place in Turkish, is close to Zarka and is situated in an atmospheric valley which has been designated as a heritage site. An unmade road runs though the old village where traditional stone houses, which have fallen into disrepair, are clustered above a winding stream. Many of the houses have been restored and others, ripe for restoration, are for sale. This area is a mecca for local bird and animal life including golden orioles, eagle owls, polecats, tortoises and terrapins. This is truly timeless, rural Greece.
