Was ihr unternehmen werdet

We’ll start at the Central Methodist Mission Church in Cape Town’s Greenmarket Square, where the early policing system was founded. We’ll walk through the Golden Acre and across the Grand Parade to the Castle—the oldest building in the city. We’ll go along the border of Buitenkant Street which separates the Colonialists from immigrants and people of colour. Another perspective with one of the locals will provide deeper insight to apartheid. Then we’ll walk to the Company Gardens to discuss political history over a coffee or juice at the restaurant. After our break, we’ll walk down Government Lane to the Slave Lodge and the slave market. Finally, we’ll visit St. George’s Cathedral, which was active in the anti-Apartheid protests, then complete the experience back in Greenmarket Square.

Born as a “person of colour,” I have first-hand experience of the brutality of apartheid and how others determine your livelihood, thus undermining one's self-worth. As a registered tour guide, I get to share not only the beauty of this City, but it's background and the capacity of forgiveness.

Wo ihr sein werdet

We’ll be in Cape Town’s CBD—Central Business District. We’ll see how spatial planning became the deciding factor in characterizing the self-worth of others, and how it affects the livelihood of people of colour.

It was my privilege to be guided by Ricky. His story is nothing short of inspirational and every visitor to Cape Town should take a guided walk with Ricky. That said , it’s much more than a history walk , it’s a life changing experience.

Ricky and this tour were wonderful! This was such a special tour and it certainly was the highlight of my time in the city. He shared very personal stories and the work he is doing in the community is simply amazing. I even went back to one of the locations we visited and had coffee with Moses, a friend of Ricky’s that he told us about.

Amidst the beauty of Cape Town’s natural landscape, the history of this city, its people and their ancestors isn’t easily forgotten. Richard presents a first-hand view into his life growing up in a society steeped in racist ideologies, governed by a white upper class and fueled by hate and violence from the native population fighting for their rights. His story begins well before he was even born and while unique it also resembles thousands of other men and women who have grown up here. If you’re looking to peel back the layers of South African history and get a real inside look at one man’s experience, this tour will move you in so many ways. Richard is a fascinating human. His story, the work he has dedicated his life to and the message it all represents is important for everyone coming to Cape Town to hear.
