Was ihr unternehmen werdet

We will meet at one of several great locations on Mt. Tam in Mill Valley. I take no more than 4 people at any one time. The total workout is designed for 1 hour.

We start with a brief, casual warm up, simple instructions on approach to this kind of running, then start up our trail. We will hike at a fast pace for 25-40 minutes (depending on your fitness) and 1000-1400 vertical feet (depending on which trail we take). We do not break but keep moving until we reach our vertical destination (the top).

At the top we take a 1-2 minute break, until everyone has caught their breath. Then we start down an intermixed set of fire roads and single track trails, running safely but aggressively with correct technique. We will finish where we started and be very tired, extremely sweaty and feel like we just skied a double black diamond!

A critical part of the experience is that it is a team experience. All of us are responsible for each other and we attempt to maintain a pace that works for the weakest hiker/runner. If someone opts out, they can turn around and go back to the start (carefully). The rest of the group will be back soon!

I am a life long outdoor enthusiast and athlete, having trained for and played college football as a defensive back. I moved to Mill Valley 20 years ago and have been an aggressive mountain athlete ever since. For the last ten years I have been a pole vault and hurdles coach where I have developed difficult multi-planar workouts for my athletes and me. My best is advanced trail running experience.

I have found pure joy and great health from this excellent mountain based interval training that involves fast hikes up steep verticals and aggressive running down! I now offer this experience to people looking to supplement sports training with additional training designed to deliver great cardiovascular health, increased bone density, speed and agility in a hiking/running workout comparable to vigorous alpine skiing.

Wo ihr sein werdet

We hike & run on Mt. Tamalpais. We start on a single track at Zig Zag- 400’ vertical- a tough, steep forest trail. We gain 800’ vertical to Gravity Trail then the Hogback Cutout up to Hogback Trail on sunny (or foggy) fire roads. We finish on Hogback at 1700’ then run down a thrilling course, all the way to the bottom of Zig Zag! Course is 3 miles, 45-75 mins. A combo of amazing scenery and running that compares to skiing the trees!

This hike and run with Jim was challenging and doable and it was a fabulous way to celebrate my 60th birthday. Several friends with varying running experience shared the experience with me and we all had a blast. The hike is steep but we took several stops to catch our breaths and enjoy the views. I took it at a pace that produced a nice burn by the time I was at the bottom and did not seem too dangerous. Others in my group that were runners were right on Jim’s tail. Jim was great about letting me/us know about the hike/run after I signed us up. I kept looking for the hike on Mt Tam maps but it is hard to find as it is so short because a map does not adequately account for vertical distance. The start location was easy to find based on Jim’s information. The day was glorious, Jim gave us a quick orientation, emphasizing safety. I instantly liked Jim, personable, leading but not pushy, wanted everyone to get something out of the event. The up part seemed to go quickly, and then it was the run down- okay I walked/hopped in a few more gnarly places. I was glad I had chosen this way to celebrate! And I was sore the next day or so but it is a sore that comes from doing something fun and challenging.
