This isn't your typical language lesson.. far from it! You will receive a formal lesson on French-Canadian vernacular- with a special focus on blasphemy! We can chat over coffee in the park or over poutine at a local Frites Alors! Expect a LOT of interesting information, and loads of laughter. Check out the reviews :)

Using my experience as a language teacher, I'll offer insight on semantics (how concepts are expressed through words) and morphology (the study of words and what they mean). As a native French Canadian, I will teach you to pronounce and understand some our most popular and funniest Québécois expressions. This experience will allow you to view our culture from a different angle and better relate to why we speak the way we speak.

You’ll do fun oral exercises and go home with a document highlighting Quebec lexicon that you can share with your friends. For example: 'en- titi' is an our way of saying "very" in Québécois. Ex: il est drôle EN TITI (he's VERY funny!). We'll focus on the antiquity of the language and learn why we say 'char' for car and 'piastre' as currency.

BIN LA!

I have specifically designed this experience for you because as a world traveler myself, this is exactly the kind of experience i'd seek to take in order to understand a foreign culture. Note: this lesson is mainly conducted in English but French speakers are welcomed! I’ll translate!

This experience is a HIT! It was front page news on local newspapers: https://www.journaldemontreal.com/2019/07/10/cours-de-sacres-pour-les-touristes-sur-airbnb.

Just read the reviews- this experience is well worth both time and money! Spend an hour with a trilingual graduate of Literature who will baffle you with Québec's language-related history and teach you about 'Joual: our local dialect. Where does it comes from? How do we pronounce the slang words?

Learn the history of state-church's domination and its impact on Québecois people. Learn about the 'language police' and the efforts made to monitor the french language. Learn all about profanities: tabarn@k d'esti d'caliss!

This one-of-a-kind experience looks at Quebec's famous french 'socialect' from a historical and cultural perspective: an easy way to truly connect with Québec.

Wo ihr sein werdet

We'll meet at FRITES ALORS (433 Rachel street), a delicious local poutine restaurant where we can eat and talk. The poutine is not included. If you prefer not to eat poutine, there's a nearby 'boulangerie' where we can pick up a coffee, juice or a sandwich and have the experience in the park right in front of Frites Alors. :)

Literally the best Montreal experience I have booked. This exceeded even my highest expectations. Alissa is super professional, knowledgeable, and even has a syllabus on what she is going to cover in the lesson. Even though I do not speak any French, the lesson was super inclusive. Alissa not only teaches you words within the language, she tells you about the history of the language and culture. You will be so immersed in this experience that the time will fly by and you will want to book a second time just to learn more. She presents the culture and language of Quebec in such a way that it is informative and entertaining. Anyone who is Montreal and is interested in learning about the culture and language, this would be the ideal tour.

We are so glad we booked this class. Alissa is very knowledgeable about the Québécois language, history, and politics from the very beginning of the colony to today. It was terrific to be able to discuss these things in depth with her. She is also a really engaging person, with a great sense of humor. There was another couple in the class with is, and Alissa helped us feel comfortable and get to know each other quickly. All in all, this was one of the best experiences we’ve ever had in Montréal, and we’ve been coming here regularly for 15 years.

What an absolutely fun and engaging learning experience! Best you learn your Quebecois profanity from Alissa as she is quite passionate about sharing the language's evolution and growing the conversation. Loved her approach, loved her stories. Highly recommended!

This experience with Alissa was even better than I expected! One of the big reasons why I came to Montreal was to practice my French and to learn a bit more about the local dialect. This experience really hit the bill! Not only was Alissa super knowledgeable and insightful, but she also prepared a really thorough accompanying booklet to supplement the experience. I learned so much about the history behind the presence of French, joual, and the Quebeois people that make up this region. Not only did I learn what these linguistic nuances are, but also how they came to be. I feel like thanks to this experience, I can go back home knowing a lot more about this special place in Canada. I definitely recommend this experience! Thanks for everything, Alissa! : )

Alissa is amazing!! I learned so much about Montreal’s history and language. Alissa illuminates the unique history of Quebec and, on top of that, is also an amazing human being. Definitely recommend this experience to anyone in Montreal.

This experience was hands down my all time favorite thing to do. If you’re like me and Alissa that have a knack for linguistics and anthropology this is right down your alley. Alissa was able to convey information about the quebecois language very well and I learned a lot from her. When she was teaching me about the history of Quebec and the oppression against the French speakers years ago, we really related and were able to give each other an insight and share perspectives. Alissa is a very passionate person about this experience and has expanded the experience in the short 8 months its been out.
