This history tour of Old Town will take you along all the best must-see local spots: the Alexandria Waterfront, Captain's Row, Market Square, the Carlyle House, Gadsby's Tavern, Christ Church, and more. Founded in 1749, the city has a rich local history ranging from the colonial period to the Civil War, and even World War II. In addition to learning about Old Town's past, you'll find out about what is going on in Alexandria today and how to make the most of your trip. The Specifics: The tour begins at Market Square, the historic center of Alexandria. From there we make a loop down to the waterfront and up Prince Street, passing the local Apothecary Shop and the Athenaeum. We wrap around the back side of Market Square to see the Carlyle House and some of Alexandria's original taverns. After Market Square, we pass George Washington's town home and stop at the site of Alexandria's first synagogue and then visit one of the city's oldest churches.
