Perhaps one of the most unusual tours during your travels in Sri Lanka would be the night time walk to locate a few of the 21 slender loris' in the forest patch of the Smithsonian Primate Research Station. We start our walk around 6:30pm when these beautiful nocturnal mammals wake up with a piercing shrill whistling call notifying each individual of the others location and off they go feeding and moving around. They are usually high up on the trees and we watch them with the aid of red lights as not to disturb them as they move through their home ranges. We ask the guests not to use white lights or flash photography as the animals would get disoriented and upset. During the hour or one and half hours on the trail we usually spot one to five individual loris but as they are wild animals, we cannot guarantee this. While you're with us, you might also be able to spot some nocturnal birds, mouse deer or the increasingly rare fishing cat!
Other things to note
White lights or flash photography is not permitted. Please wear closed shoes, long pants and long sleeve shirts. We recommend wearing insect repellent. This is not suitable if you are claustrophobic.

I am Wolf Dittus. I arrived in Sri Lanka in 1968 with the Smithsonian Institution of the USA and have been studying the dry zone primates ever since; making it the longest running study by an individual of vertebrates in the world. I work for NIFS SL.
I am Chameera and I have worked with Loris for 2 years now and primates mostly as well as monitoring the population dynamics of the lake birds in the Bird Island Sanctuary.
I am Sunil and I have worked with Prof D for 10 years documenting home ranges or the purple faced langurs and 2 years marking geo locations of the Loris in the property.

Wo ihr sein werdet
We will be at the Smithsonian Research Station, which includes about 2.5 hectares of forest. Our property is home to 21 individual loris' with geo locations and are part of the ongoing research of the Dry Zone Primates. You are able to observe them in their natural habitat while they go about feeding and moving. None of the animals are in a closed up enclosure and are free to range and our forest patch has been their homes for many generations
The Loris observation was great. We were able to see 4 during our 1.30 hour walk. If you plan to take pictures it will be really hard since only red lights can be used. Better to take videos but they could be dark as well. The experience of seeing the animals in their own habitat was something new and exciting though!

We just completed the Loris tour and it was fantastic. We saw eight individuals as well as other nocturnal wildlife. My partner works with Loris so we both have a real connection with the animal. But even without that understanding this would be a wonderful experience. Our guide Sunil is a real pleasure to be around. He is incredibly knowledgable and very passionate about the work they do. His English is flawless which enhances the experience as the knowledge of more than a decade working with the animals can be passed on. What a highlight. Thank you all.

We were lucky enough to be staying at Monkey Camp via Airbnb and Sunil had already shared his passion for monkeys and his job there before we had the privilege of going on the walk with him and a colleague. We just left the camp and straightaway saw a loris in the first big tree, so we were lucky! The walk continued through the undergrowth for about an hour and a half and I think we saw 5 or maybe 6 lorises. They are incredible animals and it is a magical spot. I have seen other reviews saying this experience is expensive but you have to realise that it's only through expertise that something can look so easy to do! I thought it was worth every rupee.
One thing - I wore long trousers and Deet and still got a lot of bites on my legs. Wear two layers of trousers if possible is my advice!
