Was ihr unternehmen werdet
As part of Qatar Museums, our co-host Museum of Islamic Art offers unique calligraphy workshops with specialized experts.
Islamic calligraphy is associated with geometric Islamic art, arabesque, on the walls and ceilings of mosques as well as on the page. For Muslims it is a visible expression of the highest art of all, the art of the spiritual world.
Discover the world of calligraphy in the Gulf’s most prominent center of Islamic art and its history – Qatar’s Museum of Islamic Art. Calligraphy is the writing of Arabic letters in a beautiful way, also calligraphy was a tool of communication. However, its letters were used as an aesthetic to decorate buildings, coins and other art pieces. The reason it is used for decoration is that it is connected with continuous letters which help the calligrapher to create geometric and vegetal shapes . Through rotation, and intertwining of the letters, the artist was able to create different types of scripts . Therefore, Arabic calligraphy was associated with decoration.
The workshop is held with our expert calligrapher Mr. Hussein Ammar Mukhtar Ahmed and after it, explore fourteen centuries long history of the Islamic art on a tour of the museum collection with special focus on calligraphy. The activities continue with tour of the museum library, followed by specially created treasure hunt.
Other things to note
Dress code is modest casual attire, as for the museum visit it is advised that the knees and shoulders are covered.
